In order to protect the cities potable water system from possible contamination the City of Brawley adopted a Cross-Connection Control Program (Sec. 26A.1), pursuant to the State of California Administrative Code, Title 17, (Public Health); requiring that all commercial businesses who present an actual or potential hazard are required to provide proper protection against cross-connection.

FOG Program

The City of Brawley has a proactive relationship with food service establishments (FSE) to keep fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from entering the sewer system.  Initiated in 2010 the City’s FOG program  contacts all FSE’s to determine their current method for treating FOG and works with the business to ensure they comply with all regulations.

What is FOG?  The term "FOG" refers to Fats, Oils, and Grease which are commonly found in such things at meat fats, lard, cooking oil, shortening, butter and margarine, food scrapes, baked goods, sauces and soups and dairy products.  Residential users as well as businesses generate FOG waste.

The City of Brawley Water Conservation program is in effect year-round.  We have establish a water conservation hotline, provide water saving devices to our residents, and monitor for water wasters.

Hydrant Flushing & Valve Exercising

Hydrant flushing is part of our annual distribution maintenance program.  The flushing is important to maintain water quality by removing sediment that settles in the mains over time.  This is accomplished by fully opening the hydrant so as to scour the inside of the pipe removing all sediment.  This work involves little or no interruption to service, although a slight discoloration, and slight drop in pressure may occur in areas where flushing is underway.  If this happens, run all your cold water taps a few minutes until the water clears.  Repeat if necessary. Your water pressure will return to normal once the flushing has been completed.

So if you should see water running down the gutter, it will most likely be our maintenance crew.  The process may appear to waste water but the routine is necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system allowing us to deliver the highest quality of water to our customers.

Another important part of our distribution maintenance is our valve exercise program.  It ensures that valves be in good working condition and can be relied on to function properly during emergencies.

Storm Water Pollution

Due to our desert region, many residents within the City of Brawley are unaware of the storm drain pollution problem and the threat it poses to local drains, the New River and ultimately the Salton Sea.  In fact, many people don’t realize that much of the City’s storm drains connect directly to local waterways, without treatment.

Many manmade pollutants such as trash, grease, construction products and vehicle solvents accumulate on local streets and parking lots.  When the rain does fall, these pollutants are carried into our local storm drains and end up in our drains and river.  Throughout the year, over watering of lawns and landscaping area, car washing, and hosing down of driveways washes pet droppings, fertilizers and cleaning solvents into the City’s storm drain system and eventually to the local drains and river affecting the local ecosystem.

The City of Brawley Municipal Codes is in the development stage to prevent and enforce illegal dumping to pollutants with the City’s storm drain systems.  Contact the Public Works Department at (760) 344-5800 to report any illegal dumping activity.
